Caller ID (caller identification or CID, and more properly Calling Number Identification-CNID) is a telephone service that transmits the caller's number to the called party's telephone equipment during the ringing signal or when the call is being set up but before the call is answered. TeleSmart®'s technology connects to incoming phone lines and accepts inbound Caller ID's on any inbound calls. It also logs DTMF digits sent during the conversation, so your application can find out which mailbox or extension the caller selected.

Uses for Caller ID
Caller ID is often helpful for tracing down prank calls and telemarketers...as well as connecting to databases to check inbound orders for fraud. There are many other uses for receiving the originating phone number as calls come in-such as "screen popping". In a Screen Pop, the phone number is used to search a database and extract information such as the caller's name, location, prior business relationships, etc. This information can be displayed on your call center agent's workstation as the call is being simultaneously transferred to this agent.
